I have to admit that we here at frt are very greatful for the comments we receive. Most of the comments are smart and prove that even if you are a casual fan, you can understand a lot of what the game of football has to offer. I would imagine that none of our commenters have ever played one down of professional football, but to me it seems that as a group, we understand the game far better than many who get paid millions of dollars to play and coach it (Ron is example number one).
We like to think that rather than having a site full of rants, that we put some interesting numbers and concepts together to PROVE that the Bears ex-offensive coordinator wasn’t just bad for the Bears, that he was consistently bad over his career. Outside of the numerical evidence, we put up a shitload of anecdotal evidence, such as speaking out about the resurrected careers of Turner castoffs, analyzing play calls and other items.
Recently we were contacted by a person that wanted to start up a new website dedicated to analyzing the Bears coaching staff. Probably not interested.
The bottom line is that we don’t get paid for any of this and do it in our spare time for our own entertainment. We are happy that so many great commenters and others joined us for this ride.
In the end, all we want is for the Bears to be good. That is probably not going to happen for the forseeable future since Angelo fucked up all of our draft picks, and he and Lovely have huge contracts for many aging players. But we can always hope. And hope we will.
I guess what I am saying in a long winded sort of way is that we don’t want to have to write this shit, but we have to. Since the firing of Ron, the Bears have lost out on at least their first two choices for OC, and Mike Martz is just sitting at home, waiting for his buddy Lovely to give him a jingle. If we have to set up fire Mike Martz or fire (insert name here) we probably will. But we really don’t want to.
This place will probably be seldom updated after the draft – it will be baseball season for gods sake, and I have my beloved Brewers to follow, and Carl has his Cubs and Sox (don’t get me started on how he likes both). And it will be summer so I have a lot of running and biking to do. You should get outside too.
But we will more than likely be back in the fall, when the preseason games start up, hoping beyond hope that we have someone in that OC position that can call some good plays and be creative for once. All I know is that I won’t have to see the I formation of death ™ twenty times a game anymore. And when we sit in the non psl upper deck next fall, Carl and I probably won’t have to give each other three to one odds that the Bears will get ONE first down on any given drive.
So thanks for everything to everyone – I will put up an update here and there and certainly something around draft time, but don’t expect too much from me until August on the Bears.
One last techincal note, I think it would be smart for us to keep our current url and just change the masthead if and when the time comes. I like our current group of commenters and don’t want to lose anyone. Any input on that is appreciated – I am sure that Fro Dog can relate to that with his fire Dusty Baker url which is timeless and classic.
Dan,
I just want to say that this is an awesome site, and I hope you guys don’t close it for a while. As a Bears fan, I enjoy the comments and thoughtful posts week in and week out during the season. It’s also nice to hear some of the solutions for this team. Will you guys keep the format of the website the same, or do you plan to change it? As long as you guys don’t close the site, I’m happy with that. Thanks!
Tyler,
We plan on keeping the format and everything else the same for now. Thanks for the comments. Like I said, we like to put things up that aren’t rants (although a good rant is great for the soul once in a while).
Always fun! Love random ranting backed up by numbers!
BTW, Mike Tice was hired as the Bears Offensive Line coach today. Idk, it seems kinda weird to have an OL coach hired before the OC is hired. Might somebody already be in for the job that we haven’t heard about yet? This seems like a VERY backward way of going about this…
Yep Doshi, typical Bears, bass ackwards. I am sure Tice was cheap but I don’t mind him. He is pretty intense and loved to ticket scalp so how bad can he be?
I remember a few years ago when the Vikings had that boat incident with a bunch of strippers and Tice was the coach at the time. Not sure if Tice was on that boat but I remember a dumb joke about it.
A friend of mine came up to me after the Packers coach (Mike Sherman) was fired and said “The Packers just hired Mike Tice as the entertainment coordinator”. Now, I don’t have much of a sense of humor but I did get a kick out of it.
Glad you brought that up Fro Dog, I loved reading about the Vikings stripper boat again. I don’t think he was on the boat.
He was involved in scalping his Super Bowl tickets though and got fined $100k by the league for doing it. That is a huge fine for doing something that the league participates in on a regular basis (StubHub and others).
well guys, i look forward to your rants/raves/discussions come august. go bears!
Like any Bears fan, it’s difficult to watch your team fail to capitalize on certain upswings in their fortunes, and sign that key player, or keep that key player on the roster. But I can see things from the McCaskey perspective also. Why bother investing a single cent ? Losing doesn’t seem to affect the dividend checks coming in from the NFL. Why waste money ? Fans were calling for the replacement of Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo (Turner of course). Such a move would have cost close to $90 million at a conservative estimate. From a business perspective, I would not have made the changes – why hand your profit back when making sweeping changes would not net you any more money ? Pride ? Virginia is religious and pride is a deadly sin….. nothing will change until the McCaskeys sell to someone who cares about football. And will that ever happen … ?
