Ron Thinks He’s Coming Back

This grim article in Chicago Breaking News (part of Chicago Tribune) is titled

Ron Turner Expects to Return as Coordinator

The article has a brief interview with Ron Turner after the win today against hapless Detroit.

Turner, who is signed through next season, grew uneasy with inquiries about his future after Sunday’s 37-23 win at Detroit. But he was asked, point blank, if he expects to return.

“Yeah, yeah,” he said. “Again, I’m pleased with the way we played today. (We) did a lot of good things and the last couple weeks our guys responded, and when they scored to tie it up, our guys showed what they’re made of and showed their character. Right now, that’s what I’m thinking about.”

You mean in the last couple of weeks WHEN THE BEARS WERE MATHEMATICALLY ELIMINATED FROM THE PLAYOFFS? You mean the two weeks that don’t matter?

While we all want to see the Bears win we all knew that Turner was likely to pull a few good games out of his rear end to attempt to save himself for another year. That is what happened these last two weeks, when he started to call games that weren’t completely retarded, when it didn’t matter, of course.

We’ll see what happens in the off season.

While I’d bet that Ron is gone I wouldn’t count on it. Since everyone is telling me the Bears are unlikely to part with Lovie and Angelo because of their huge contracts, then maybe they won’t even bother throwing Bears fans a bone and flushing Ron. For God’s sakes they keep Babich around which is already dumbfounding enough.

Tell me it aint so!!! There is no way anyone with sense would think that these last 2 games earns DumbRon the right to stay! He took a B+/A- QB and called D- plays for him all season. Not to mention they were the samy D- plays he has called his entire career. DumbRon is the only OC that I know that you can actually review film from 3 years ago and gameplan against him. Everything with him is the exact same every game every down! Come on McCaskeys at least buy us a new OC. By the way, Angelo if you are reading get us some O-linemen with the picks we have left. There will actually be good WR left in the late rounds this year and a couple of diamonds in the rough. Give us some hope that this crap won’t happen again in 2010!

  2. TO6 says:

Oh by the way, would someone please tell Angelo that there is a 6-4 WR with hands like baseball mits and knows how to run routes named Marshall that kind of knows Cutler that will be available in the offseason. Hint: Don’t give away the 2011 draft for him, but PLEASE make a real attempt to get him!!! Tell Denver you will give them Ron Turner, Babich and a 1st round pick for him!!!

  3. Gee says:

Aromashadou is a good receiver that can become great if given the PT and confidence. Cutler can make him his new target and he is big. I knew we had something in him since the preseason but DumbRon decided to use him this late in the season over smaller receivers. Idiotic!

  4. Scott says:

Same thing happened at the end of the 2007 season. The offense played good and Ron Turner saved himself from an awful season.

  5. Kyle says:

He expects to be back, huh? I expected the Bears to be a contending team, but that didn’t happen. I SUSpect that most fans that have ever been on this site could do a better job than Turner, and at a fraction of the price.

  6. Kyle says:

    P.S.
Ron Turner shouldn’t be fired now. He should have been fired at least 3 years ago!!! Actually, he should have never been rehired in the first place. What kind of blackmail information does this D-bag have on the McCaskey family?

  7. Doshi says:

Well, Monday has come and gone without any indication of intent from the Bears. There is a press conference scheduled tomorrow. According to the Bears website, “The future of Smith and others in the organization will be revealed during a press conference Tuesday.” I’ll take that as promising. Everybody knows that Turner should be fired, as well as Pep Hamilton for the screwjob he did with Cutler this year, and Harry Hiestand for that debacle of an offensive line. For all of our whining and complaining, Babich’s LB core has been remarkable given their injury situation (and having something like 5 different starting lineups throughout the season). Hoke hasn’t been terrible either, given that he’s had only one true vet on his squad (Peanut). So, here’s my quick list based off the Bears Coaches page…

    Keep:
Lovie Smith — Mostly cuz of that contract.
Rob Boras — Just gotta toughen up Olsen. He’s got a track record of success with this team, so leave him around.
Bob Babich — As long as his sphere of influence is limited to the LBs only.
Dave Toub — One of the best special teams coaches in the NFL.
Rod Marinelli — Not his fault that the inside is weak and talentless.
Gill Byrd — The secondary wasn’t too bad this year, given the propensity of rookies.
Jon Hoke — See Byrd, Gill.
Chris Tabor — See Toub, Dave.

    Trash:
Ron Turner — I’m calling 2010 the Chicago Screwjob.
Pep Hamilton — See Turner, Ron.
Tim Spencer — MASSIVE regression this year. I can’t believe that Forte could look so good last year and so terrible this year.
Darryl Drake — He’s been here for 6 seasons, and his WRs have not improved in those six years.
Harry Hiestand — I think that him, Hamilton, and Spencer had a little bet as to which group could regress the most this year.
Luke Butkus — See Hiestand, Harry.
Charles London — See Drake, Darryl.
Rusty Jones — Too many injuries, and the players are all weaker than the rest of the NFL.
Jim Arthur — Our players just looked weak compared to the rest of the NFL.

Basically, we need an entirely new offensive staff, and we need a couple of scapegoats on the defensive side that could hopefully be replaced with some halfway decent coaches. A name that I very rarely see thrown out there (I think I’m the only one mentioning it) is Chan Gailey, the former OC for the KC Chiefs. I know their offense hasn’t exactly been high powered over the last couple of years, but his work over the second half last year was remarkable. Using a third string rookie QB and a bunch of retreads, has-beens, and never-will-bes, this team averaged 23.3 PPG over 9 of the last 10 games of the season, scoring less than 20 points only twice during that span. IMO, that’s at least decent, and I firmly believe that this Bears team has significantly more talent than the Chiefs team, at least enough for Gailey to give them, idk, 25 PPG over a season? Remember, this was a Chiefs team with Charles as a rookie and LJ on his last legs, with Mark Bradley as their #1 wideout and a couple of nonames at QB.

Anybody else have any suggestions about the OC position, outside of simply firing RT?

  8. Doshi – I think that, unfortunately, you will be mostly correct. It doesn’t seem that the Bears will want to cut Lovie and others due to those buyouts. the REAL solution is to shitcan ALL and start over with Cowher and his bunch, but I think that is $100mm that the McCaskeys don’t necessarily want to part with at this point in time (or ever).

For a new OC, I really wouldn’t mind Weis and we might get him on the cheap since he is rolling in the dough from his ND payoff package. He did a really great job in New England – some people just aren’t cut out to be collej coaches, and some aren’t cut out to be pro coaches.
