That idiotic grinning skull from the Chicago Tribune, Dan Pompei, recently “wrote” an article titled “Mobile Cutler Would Provide Benefits“. As we’ve noted previously, Pompei is Turner’s biggest apologist in town, and let’s Turner twist the situation around to make it look as if he isn’t the worst offensive coordinator around.
Cutler is a mobile quarterback and likes to throw on the roll out. Per the statistics in the article, his career passing rating in the pocket is 79.3 and 114.3 outside the pocket. As we all noted in that last game (the “who were those guys” game) Cutler DID roll out and he was extremely effective doing so (relative to the Bears, that is). Dan has been noting that the most exasperating element of the Bears’ offense this year is that they are doing the EXACT SAME THING as they did last year, even though they now have a mobile and capable quarterback, and they should CHANGE THE OFFENSE to leverage this strength.
Then Pompei starts to shill for Turner.
Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner sounds like he wished he had moved Cutler more this season too… Turner acknowledged the plan was to get Cutler outside the pocket more than they did. In the off-season, he talked bout incorporating more movement plays.
He said he veered from the plan in part because of game situations and the styles of defenses the Bears faced… Turner took some of the blame, saying he should have called more movement plays. “There were opportunities we could have done it more and probably should have,” he said.
Well DUH! You pick up a quarterback that is best out of the pocket, and then you CHANGE YOUR OFFENSE. There were a million opportunities to mix it up – couldn’t they have done it against Baltimore, when the offense was SHUT OUT? When nothing is working, why do you continue to stick to your idiotic game plan?
Then Ron Jaworski, the former QB turned commentator, summed up what the Bears’ offense is missing:
Shanahan took advantage of that strong arm… they would do a lot of unique things getting him outside the pocket. They weren’t for throwing the ball in the flat to the tight end. They were deep posts, deep crosses, post corner routes. They were trying to take advantage of the strong arm.
Yes yes yes of course you would change your offense to take advantage of a quarterback’s strengths, if you were a decent or even adequate offensive coordinator, but then you wouldn’t be Ron Turner.
I also saw in the article that Ron Turner’s contract was renewed somewhere along the way and now it is through 2010. Unknown why the Bears made that bonehead move but now some more money to eat when they sever Turner in the off-season, which of course we are pleading to see happen.

“Mobile Cutler Would Provide Benefits” – WOW what a title for an article that is. Like you said, DUH!
DUH as in DUMBRON! Can you believe these 2 idiots? Everyone with an inkling of football knowledge expected to see Cutler get outside of the pocket this year. We expected that common sense would show you by game 6 that you needed to put a real WR in the game (hint hint: D’Shodu) and move the HesterProject into the slot! We FREAKIN’ expected to have an OC with at least the ability of a HS or college OC, but I forgot he already proved he couldn’t do that! BUT we hired him anyway. Finally maybe we can fire the bum!!!
As a frequent visitor to this site, I’d like to say that I’ve changed my mind about Turner. He’s actually worse than I thought. Cutler never rolled out because of the defenses they faced? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Hey Turner, it’s called trying something else because none of the stuff you call EVER FUCKING WORKS!!!! Listening to this d-bags excuses makes me want to hit my head against the wall. Any defense from the last 50 years could stop your I-formation bullshit, but it didn’t stop you from calling that. The part of the article that made me the angriest was when he talked about the offseason!!!! He needs to find something he is capable of doing (i.e. nothing to do with football) in the offseason. I love the Bears, but if this moron isn’t fired, I’m not watching or going to another game until he is. As much as I hate Angelo, the Bears can at least do the fans the favor of firing Ron Turner. At least that’s a step in the right direction.
